Cemetery Zombie Bottle Cap Monster

Bill Hinzman as the Cemetery Zombie from the classic horror film "Night of the Living Dead". I painted this one in all black and white as a tribute to this awesome B&W film. This one was painted for my friend Travis at work- his son is a big fan of NOTLD. I watched "Spider Baby" and "Blood Bath" while working on this one. Acrylic paint inside a bottle cap.

Living Dead Tombstone

For the past couple of weeks I have been experimenting with some Halloween prop building. Built this grinning tombstone with my friend in terror, Jordan Colton. This was made from a sheet of insulation foam, some papier mache clay, and some creative painting using acrylic craft paints.

I learned a lot from building this, and I am looking forward to doing more projects in this same vein. Oh yeah, gotta give credit for the inspiration on this to "STOLLOWEEN". Check out his website via the link here on my blog.

Bride of Frankenstein BCM

The second of two Bottle Cap Monsters I painted last night. Finally got around to painting the lovely Elsa Lanchester as The Bride of Frankenstein. This one is for my friend and talented artist Chrissie Altese. I promised her I would paint a Bottle Cap Monster for her quite some time ago, and this was the monster she picked. Great choice! I am a huge fan of The Bride, and I was worried it was going to be tough to capture a good likeness of her at such a small scale. I am really happy with the way this one turned out.

As usual, this is acrylic paint inside a bottle cap lid.

Frank The Bunny BCM #3

Got in some painting time last night, managed to create 2 new Bottle Cap Monsters. The first was this version of Frank The Bunny from the film "Donnie Darko". This is the third time I have been asked to paint this character in a bottle cap- this one is for my good friend Jordan Colton. As usual, this is acrylic paint inside a bottle cap lid.

Trying out a new format for my Bottle Cap Monsters. This one was designed for the Dark Night of the Scarecrow Bottle Cap Monster I recently painted. The Bottle Cap will be glued on the top of the coffin area, and I will sign the bottom.

Just finished painting this one. Going to try a new format with this one, instead of gluing the cap to the standard cardboard coffin, I will be designing a 4x6 background to glue it on. I think it will make the Bottle Cap Monsters a little more practical, and at least easier to frame and hang on a wall. This one was a commissioned piece, and it sounds like it will be used as birthday present. I always try to make every bottle cap a little bit different, even if I have painted the same character before, so I moved the focus a little closer to Bubba's face this time. I am very happy with the way this one turned out, and looking forward to seeing it on the 4x6 photo once I get it finished.

I created this guy for a forthcoming t-shirt design I am working on, drawn with Pigma Micron felt tip markers, Prismacolor markers and Prismacolored pencils. This sketch card sold during the Halloween season at my art table at the Haunted Forest. I probably should have held on to this one, as I quite liked it (seeing as how I use the art as my icon here at Mordacious Art!) but ya can't keep 'em all and I am always happy to sell my artwork. If anyone is interested in buying an original sketch card, I only charge $10 for each one.

Did a little sketching tonight, in pencil no less! I love to draw with pencil, so who knows why I don't do it more often. Just one of those unexplainable things I suppose. Return of the monster!

Just when you thought the monster was dead, he comes crawling back through the cobwebs and bone fragments scattered along the crypt floors! My sincere apologies to anyone that has stopped by my blog in the last while- I have been terrible about updating, but once again I am hoping to correct that and start adding more of my morbid creations here. I finally updated the look of this blog which was also WAY overdue!

Things finally seem to have settled down with my employment situation, as I am approaching my 1 year anniversary as a Graphic Designer for the Deseret News, a newspaper based in Salt Lake City, Utah. I have also been very busy working on a BIG horror related project that I really can't talk much about at the moment, but with a little luck and a little more time I should be able to start revealing more about it soon.

In the meantime, I will try to post some of the limited artwork I have done recently, and I am really making an effort to get back into the swing of doing more artwork, including more bottle cap monsters! To get things started, here's a look at a sketch book page I filled a few months ago- I am almost finished with the following page in the same sketchbook, and will be posting it here soon as well. As usual, this was all drawn with various Pigma Micron felt tip markers in my moleskine sketchbook.

Man, it has been too long since I posted here on this neglected old blog! Truth be told, I forgot my user name and password to log in here- how lame is that?

Bottle Cap Monster NECKLACES!

I finally managed to find a few spare hours last night to sit down and paint again! Man, I hate it when I go so long without doing artwork, it's almost like a vitamin deficiency or something, I can feel it gnawing on me inside when I am not doing enough creative work!

In an attempt to make my crazy little Bottle Cap Monsters a bit more practical, I decided to try creating a Bottle Cap Monster Necklace. This is the premier BCM necklace, with good old Jack Skellington- this one was by request for my good friend Travis Jones. Travis is a serious collector of Nightmare Before Christmas stuff, and he has been subltly hinting for a long time that he wanted a Jack Skellington BCM, so at long last I sat down and created one for him.

Painting Jack was actually tougher than I anticipated- he looks deceptively simple to paint, but there is a lot of stuff going on that makes it hard to make him look right. It was a fun challenge, and I enjoyed the process. More of these to come soon!

Glow of the Laboratory

Been a crazy couple of past weeks for me. Took a break from painting after Monsterpalooza, but that could only last so long- so I decided to crank out a larger scale acrylic painting, and this was the result. Painted on masonite board. I have a feeling there will be lots more to come soon. I am also getting started on a larger airbrush illo of Creature from the Black Lagoon. Man, Universal monsters are too much fun to paint!

I couldn't claim to be a Star Wars fan if I didn't start painting some of the great monsters from those movies on my bottle caps! What better place to start than with a Tusken Raider? Anakin may have wiped out an entire camp of these guys, but there will always be a place in my heart for that scene in Episode 4 when the tusken raider rises up right in front of Luke!

Kong is one mean monster, I love the scene when he crushes a person and grinds them into the dirt like he is putting out a cigarette. Classic stuff that! I was looking in my old art files and found this cartoon of Frankenstein I drew a year or so ago. I had started to color the file a bit, but never really finished it completely. I spent a little time working it back up tonight, added the jacket and shirt and finished the colors. Frankenstein is just a great monster to do in cartoon style. I have been getting into doing more Adobe Illustrator work lately- I could have gone way overboard cleaning up a lot of stuff on this one, but I wanted to finish him and move on to some other projects I have kicking around in my head. Don't ask what my obsession is with green skulls, apparently I just think they look cool. Created entirely in Adobe Illustrator CS3, using my Wacom Graphire tablet. During the excitement of the Halloween season last year, I somehow managed to skip posting some of my recent artwork. This is was a return to a traditonal art style I hadn't worked with for many years- acrylic on canvas. Basically just a large scale version of a character I painted in one of my Bottle Cap Monsters which I called "Broccoli Head". My daughter Brandi got such a kick out of the character that I gave her the Bottle Cap Monster and then decided it would be fun to do a larger version of that character. I really have no idea what is going on here, just a lovely green skeleton zombie that is blistering over I suppose. The original painting will be availble for purchase at the Monsterpalooza show in Burbank, CA - May 29th-31st 2009.

Multi-Skull face makeup

I ventured out to the "Transworld Halloween Show" in Las Vegas this past weekend.
Had a fun time, got to meet Wes Craven (Freddy Krueger's father) and did a little makeup work on my wife Mimi at the Mehron Makeup booth. This was all hand painted with a regular makeup brush, then added the colors using an airbrush and Mehron's new "Lux" airbrush makeup line. I figured I would try something different rather than just doing a full skull face, I wanted to paint a bunch of little skulls all over the place.

I got to meet a lot of really great people at the show, and I look forward to working with some of you soon!!

Traveling for Work and Goodbye Forry!

Another delay in posting here at Mordaciousart... My boss at work came running into my area on the Monday before Thanksgiving and told me they needed me to travel to Croatia ASAP. So the day after Thanksgiving I found myself on a very long flight to Croatia, where I would spend a week working at a newspaper there. The good news is, I did manage to draw a couple of new creeps during one of my flights. The bad news is, while I was in Croatia, another legendary horror icon passed away. Forrest J. Ackerman, the creator of the term Sci-Fi, as well as the creator of the awesome magazine "Famous Monsters of Filmland" died on Thursday, December 4th.
I am very glad that I was able to meet Forry in person a couple years ago at Comic-Con in San Diego. This is a photo of him signing a copy of FMOF for me, as well as some mini horror movie posters. At the time, I had my then 10 year old son with me. I told him not to forget that moment, as Forry was one of the true legends in keeping the horror banner flying, even when it wasn't a popular thing to do. It's truly a bummer that Forry is no longer with us.

While I was in Croatia, I managed to sneak in some time to visit one of the local/legendary cemeteries. This is a photo of yours truly in Mirogoj cemetery. Far and away one of the most amazing places I have ever visited. Amazing architecture and detailed and intricate headstones/statues. Leave it to Mr. Mordacious to visit a cemetery while in a foreign country!!

Alright fiends- I promise there is more monster filled artwork coming soon. I am also taking note of all the comments you are leaving for me, and I will work harder at getting more artwork on here to fulfill your requests! Hope you are all having a great Christmas season!!

About time I posted some more artwork here- even if it was created back in 1983! Watercolors and fake blood. Yeah, I actually mixed fake blood into the red paint when I painted the blood splats in the background. Probably trying to imitate KISS with their mixing blood into the red ink for printing their first comic book. I was too queasy to use my own blood, so fake blood was the only way to go!

Check out his uniform, he actually went out and shot if full of holes! It had been a while since I had done a good gore makeup, and I loved the way this makeup turned out!!

BOTTLE CAP MONSTERS!!

I have been waiting for a long time to show these things off! You are looking at an idea I came up with about 2 years ago. These were created as a way to offer original artwork at an affordable price. Each one of these is an original, one-of-a-kind, hand painted acrylic painting on the inside of a bottle cap (1" diameter). Each painting is then coated with a clear laquer to protect it, and the bottle caps are then glued to a sturdy coffin board, which shows the date the monster was created, and then hand signed. Sort of like a Cabbage Patch doll, only way uglier (depending on who you ask!)...
I will be creating and posting many more of these here. They are available for $15 each plus $2 shipping. Wow- I hit my 200th post here today, and yesterday I posted my 200th deviation on my Deviantart page. The planets must be aligned or something.
These are a couple of photos showing the hearse I airbrushed for the Haunted Forest late last month. The top shot shows the work in progress, and the bottom one shows the finished product. This was actually my first "official" airbrush work on metal- I really loved doing the painting, but wearing a respirator when using the eurethane paints is annoying. I feel like Darth Vader the entire time, but at least I am not destroying my brain cells with those toxic fumes I suppose. I am excited to do more work on metal, I have several books I plan on studying soon to help me improve. I was quite happy with the way this logo turned out- I am sure it would look even better with a nice clear coat applied, but the owner of the Haunted Forest wants to wait until next season to really spend any money on this hearse. What a cool car!! I would love to own that thing!

I would be the WORST horror artist ever if I neglected to post anything on my blog during the month of October!! Sorry for the long delay, I have been working myself into a horror frenzy the last few weeks, doing makeup at the Haunted Forest in American Fork, Utah every night, and also getting ready for my first ever art exhibit at the October Evening event coming up on October 18th. I am getting my Freddy Kruger art framed up nicely (only took me 18 years...not bad I guess) to use as a backdrop behind my table, and I have been working on getting a bunch of merchandise ready to sell at the show, including prints, mini prints and a couple of surprises that I will also be making available here on my blog soon!! Can't wait to unveil them, I have been working on this concept for a couple of years now, and I am excited to hear what people think!

I just wanted to throw on a picture I took last night at the Haunted Forest- the green glow with the red candle made this one look really cool... I will also post some of my latest makeup work here soon... at any rate, stay scary and have an awesome October and a fright filled Halloween. More posts soon!!

One of the main reasons for doing the Christel Death makeup photo shoot sequel was to get some photos of her with a hearse. I came up with the idea many months ago, and we had a hard time tracking down a hearse to use for the photo shoot. Strangely enough, I got hired as the makeup artist for a local haunt here in Utah called The Haunted Forest, and whaddya know- they just happen to have a 1972 hearse parked in their back lot. The owner was kind enough to give us permission to do our photo shoot at the Forest, and we intended to use the hearse for a bunch of the shots...Unfortunately, the weather wasn't gonna cooperate with us, so the only shots we got were my candid quick shots- the rain was relentless that day. Maybe sometime in the future we can revisit this concept and get some pro photos. Until then, enjoy my amateur shots!

Christel Death is back to haunt me!

Another gruelling 7 hours of makeup work later, and Christel Death returned to haunt me once again. I snapped a few photos during the photo shoot- I can't wait for the pro photos to be ready, they looked so incredible! We will be offering limited edition signed prints soon... stay tuned- I can't wait to post them!

More Gore

By popular demand (my friend Silvano requested more gore!) here is some more old art showing my "splatter influence". Oddly enough, I was drawing a similar picture to this one when my wife spoke to me for the first time. We were sitting next to each other in a psychology class in college, and she noticed my gruesome sketch, and asked me if I was an artist. Just goes to show you that you should never underestimate the power of a gore cartoon- it might just be the catalyst that introduces you to your future wife!

I am not really sure what this particular drawing was all about, probably just an excuse to practice drawing gallons of blood spraying from a twisted face.

Years ago I used to draw some rather gory cartoons. I tend to avoid the gore these days and focus on monsters. I found this old sketch and found it weird enough that I had to post it. I am guessing this one comes from around 1987 or 88, ball point pen in a ruled notebook. I could have gone in and tried to clean this up digitally, but hey- it's an oldie so let it show off the bumps and bruises...and severed limbs...

Scream Until You Like It- Part 2

So this is the latest version of my "Scream Until You Like It" character. Just trying to push his coloring a little further and give him a more "realistic" vibe. I had actually painted in a cool dungeon-esque background, and I was quite proud of it, but for some reason it just didn't work as effictively as I had been hoping for. I am going to do a new version with a different background, but for now, you get the quick and easy black and blood splattered red background. I love working digitally, always a challenge and always fun!!

Curse of the Fanged Freak

Another vile creature I dragged kicking and screaming out of the dark corners of the vault. From 1988 this time. Ball point pen, lotsa cleanup and added background in Photoshop.
I went to the Park City Arts Festival with the family this weekend, always fun to get out and see all the work that the "normal" artists are creating and selling. Also got me all fired up to do some more traditional artwork, so I started working on a canvas last night using acrylics. Lotsa fun! Can't wait to work on it some more.

Do Ya Feel Lucky, Punk?

Is it possible that July is gone already?? It drives me crazy that the Summer is flying by so quickly! My kids will be back in school on August 18th, which also happens to be my son's birthday. Talk about adding insult to injury! "Happy Birthday kiddo- now go back to school!"
I couldn't let the month slip away without posting one more monster. This is another old one from 1992, back when I was using Sharpies and glossy card stock to do my artwork. I was also busy working on my heavy metal fanzine called "Not Fragile", and I drew a lot of crazy stuff like this to use in various places throughout the 'zine. The fun part about old artwork is that I can now take it and scan it in to my computer and go crazy adding fun backgrounds in Photoshop or even re-doing the art completely using the Wacom tablet. Gotta love technology- when I was doing the 'zine I had to use a photocopier to scale down my artwork, then paste it into place. UGGH...

The Worms Crawled In

When I am left alone with my sketchbook and Pigma Micron pens, it's a pretty good bet that I am either gonna draw a skeleton or a zombie. In this case, the zombies won! Zombies are just "oozing" with so many detail possibilities, and since I am crazy for details they make a lot of appearances in my artwork. In the "coming soon" department, I will be doing some artwork of a "zombie chick" as an art trade for my good friend Chrissie, who drew an off the dial picture of the Bride of Frankenstein for me earlier this year.

In other news, I picked up the new Alice Cooper CD "Along Came A Spider" yesterday ( I only had to go to FOUR different stores trying to find it- Best Buy didn't have it, FYE didnt have it, and Circuit City didn't have it!! Finally, Wal-Mart came through for me and had it... Man, sometimes being a horror fan in Utah can really suck!!)
All I can say is- Alice is still the reigning king of horror rock. I love the packaging on the CD, the music is TOP NOTCH, and the overall theme is way cool. Just listen to the whole thing and check out the cool dialog from Alice at the end. Creepy and cool all the way across the board!

Moonlit Morgue at Midnight

This one was really entertaining to work on. As usual, this undead creature came to life at work, sketched out with a ballpoint pen. I scanned him in, and was ready to post him as another sketch, when the creative impulse kicked in and decided it was time to give this poor zombie a digital facelift. I modified a lot of his facial features, and added a lot of the background. Also spent some time adding in some tones and shades to make him a little more realistic. Then added the sepia tones to make it look a bit more aged. That's one of my favorite things about art- you never know where it will take you. Sometimes it seems like these monsters really do have a mind of their own and decide where they want to go.
The watch this guy is wearing was inspired by a photo hanging at my desk at work. This is quite a fashionable zombie with his big old Fossil watch and oversized hoop ear ring.

Question Authority

I actually posted this cover artwork quite a while ago here on my blog, but this week I have been asked by the mighty KARSWELL over at The Horrors Of It All blog to be a guest judge for a contest he is holding. The Corpse that Time Forgot

The title for this drawing is appropriate on several levels. First of all, this drawing comes from around 1990. I was attempting to do a t-shirt business out of my parent's basement and this was one of the designs I had available. It also reminds me a lot of "The Forgotten Prisoner of Castel Mare" one of the coolest Aurora long box models of all time. Regardless, I figured it was high time for this poor forgotten corpse to show his face to the world again here on my blog of terrors. Hopefully he dosen't smell too rotten for you!

Some Unfinished Business

When I am busy checking out other people's artwork, one of my favorite things is to see some of their works in progress or sketches. Hopefully, the same applies to the fine folks that take time to visit my blog because I sure post a lot of unfinished pieces here. The main problem I have at the moment in my artistic career is that I am not working full time as an artist. I have just a few minutes every day to sneak in a little sketch time at work, unless I happen to be stuck in a meeting which happens quite a bit, providing me with a good chance to draw and sketch without getting in trouble. Usually I end up with a lot of quick sketches and rough unfinished pieces, but often I find that there are some great things lurking in those sketches, and I can often revisit them later to finish them or use them as a basis for a detailed digital painting. This particular drawing was done with Pigma Micron felt tip markers, and I am sure I intended to have a lot more crazy monsters coming out of this mess, but never got around to finishing it up. I do like a lot of this though, and thought it was worthy of a post here on my blog. Let me know what you think!

It Dosen't Count

This is an unfinished piece I started a few years ago. I have always loved working with Adobe Illustrator, and I would still love to do a completed piece in this style. This was done manually- point by point, using the pen tool to create all of the shapes. Very painstaking and time consuming, but I really dig the style. I would love to re-create a series of classic horror movie posters similar to this one, using Illustrator. Time will tell!!

The Creep- 1983

I posted this piece on my Deviantart page the other day, and forgot to post it here. This is probably one of my earliest if not THE earliest attempt at painting with acrylics. Painted this one back in high school in 1983, my attempt at recreating the awesome poster art of the Creep from the amazing movie "Creepshow" from none other than Stephen King and George Romero.

I discovered a few interesting bits of trivia about the film, so I will include them here to help spice up this old school art post:
• Stephen King carried around a "Greedo" action figure from Star Wars on the set for good luck.
• The marble ashtray used to kill Nathan in the first story "Father's Day" is featured in all of the other stories if you look closely.
• The prop 10-cent "CREEPSHOW" comic book featured in the film was drawn and inked by veteran artist 'Jack Kamen' , one of the artists for the original E.C. crime and horror comics of the 1950's. Creepshow was a tribute to these comic books. Jack Kamen also created the comic book-style poster for the film, which was also featured on the front of the Plume "Creepshow" comic book adaptation (which Bernie Wrightson, another prolific horror comic artist, drew and inked the interiors for). Originally, ('Stephen King (I)' wanted Graham Ingels, another EC artist (famous for his work on the title "The Haunt of Fear") to do the artwork for the film's poster, but he refused. It was head of EC comics 'William M. Gaines' who then suggested Jack Kamen do the assignment. Kamen accepted.
• Near the end of the "Father's Day" story, Sylvia gets impatient and goes to the kitchen calling to Mrs. Danvers. She sees the muddy footprints and investigates further. Mrs. Danvers' corpse falls against the back of the kitchen door with her face in the round window. As Sylvia lets go of the door, you can see the dead Mrs. Danvers blink as she slides across the window out of view.

New Horrors from Alice Cooper

A tasty new slice of horror rock is coming our way on July 29th, courtesy of the master himself, Alice Cooper! The new CD titled "Along Came A Spider" looks to be another great chapter in the Alice Cooper musical library. As I write this, I am listening to a sample track "Vengeance is Mine" which can be heard on the official Alice Cooper website. Loaded with some amazing guitar work, and Alice's trademark vocals, I can already tell I will be at the music store bright and early on July 29th. I am also reading "Alice Cooper- Golf Monster", and it has been a really informative and fun read so far.

Radiation Sickness

So late last night I was loading up some stuff in the van after a family party at a park- I slipped on a curb and twisted the hell out of my right ankle. Fortunately I didn't break anything, but I tore some ligaments and seriously sprained it. Did the same thing about 20 years ago... I really hate it when things like that happen!

Face Your Fear

I think this monster was a result of indigestion. I drew him around last October while I was working in Eugene, Oregon. There was a Chinese Buffet restaurant across the street from the hotel I was staying in, and I drew this guy between bites of General Tso's chicken and Broccoli Beef. Pigma micron markers were the weapon of choice.

So, it was my birthday on Monday- Turned 41 without too much pain. My car decided to deprive me of a highly anticipated gift- I had been looking forward to buying a Canon Rebel Xti digital camera, but my car was making weird noises, and what seemed like a small problem escalated into a $1,500 repair to have the rack & pinion system replaced. Man, I coulda bought 2 cameras for that kind of money! On a brighter note, I did manage to make it out to my all time favorite BBQ restaurant, a place called Q4U located in Kearns, Utah. I have travelled far and wide with my job, and I am always on the prowl for good BBQ- fortunately for me, nothing has come close to Q4U. They have the BEST spare ribs on the planet. If you get a chance, go give Q4U a shot- you won't be disappointed. If you are, then you wouldn't know a good BBQ'ed rib if it bit ya on the butt!
